Just one day after Dwight Ciampoli left the club, he was followed by his colleague from the youth team Rob Lovegrove. Like Ciampoli, Lovegrove was given a three-month professional contract at the start of this season and, despite being on the bench for the first three matches, Lovegrove never broke through to play for the first team.
With Paul McCarthy and Dave Waterman now recovered from their recent injuries, and Jon Ashton signed from Leicester City, there was no real likelihood of centre back Lovegrove challenging for a first team place anytime in the near future. Lovegrove was captain of the youth team last season, and a regular in the centre of the reserves defence, even going in goal on occasion when required.
The loss of Lovegrove is probably on a par with the loss of Simon King in terms of lost potential although, unlike King, Lovegrove had yet to make his first team debut. He is a solid enough defender to be able to play for a Conference club or, failing that, there’s always Didcot Town.
