Results in the Conference today went United’s way, as the chasing pack dropped points, and Oxford extended their lead at the top of the table. After they won 3-0 at Cambridge last night, Oxford were five points clear, but having played a game more than their closest challengers. After today’s results, the Us are still five points clear, having played the same number of games.
The biggest surprise of the day came at Dagenham & Redbridge, where United travel in the FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round next Saturday. The Daggers were leading Kidderminster 1-0 at half-time, but the Harriers turned it around and eventually won 3-1. Weymouth also missed an opportunity to close their gap on Oxford, after they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Rushden & Diamonds. Gravesend & Northfleet took advantage of others’ slip-ups by moving up to fourth, thanks to their 1-0 defeat of Woking. Gravesend are 12 points behind Oxford.
York City dropped to fifth after drawing 2-2 at Tamworth, while Exeter are 6th after they lost 2-1 at home to Stafford Rangers. Burton Albion are in 7th place after they won 2-1 at Halifax Town, while Morecambe move up to 8th after they won 1-0 at Aldershot, who are United’s next Conference opponents in two weeks. The Shots are now 10th. In between Morecambe and Aldershot are Grays Athletic, who had an astonishing 6-0 win at St Albans, who are now third from bottom.
At the bottom are Southport, who lost 2-1 at Altrincham. One place above them are Crawley, who went down 1-0 at Forest Green Rovers. Cambridge United have dropped to 21st place. In the day’s other game, Stevenage Borough lost 2-0 at home to Northwich Victoria.
