Living in a box

From the Rage Online newsdesk Monday, July 7th, 2003

Those lovely chaps at OxVox have announced a new competition for us all to enter.

With the full support of Firoz Kassam, OxVox plans to use the Executive Boxes at the new Stadium to celebrate great names from the history of Oxford United. Each box will have a plaque displayed to commemorate a club employee (player or otherwise) who has had a positive impact on the fortunes of the club.

The OxVox committee has invited all fans of Oxford United to put forward their own nominations. The most popular ones will be put to a celebrity panel (presumably Peter Rhoades-Brown and Les Taylor!) who will determine the final list.

The following guidelines have been drawn up for nominations:

  • The club turned professional in 1949. The final list will include names from each decade in the professional era.

  • Nominations may be for players, managers, chairmen, directors or any other staff associated with the club

  • The person may still be involved in football, but they should have no current involvement with OUFC.

  • There are 28 boxes, however not all of these will be named at this time, so as to allow further nominations in future.

Fans should nominate up to 4 names per decade (thus preventing an ’80s dominance). Many fans will not know the full history of the club, but are encouraged to at least vote for those periods they do remember.

To vote, fans should send their nominations (along with their own details) to OxVox in the following ways:

– post to: OxVox, PO Box 411, Headington PO, Oxford, OX3 8XF

– email to: enquiries@oxvox.org.uk

– phone to: 01865 768505

– meet members of the OxVox committee in the Exhibition Bar at the Tottenham and Coventry friendlies.

Closing date for nominations is Sunday August 3rd. As an extra incentive to participate there will be a prize draw among all those sending in nominations, although we’ve been given no indication of what the prize is. Although this competition is open to all United supporters Rage Online highly recommends that you join OxVox at the same time as sending in your nominations. For a team boasting average attendances of almost 6,000 last season it is somewhat abject that the club’s main supporters’ organisation has fewer than 200 members, a fact that doesn’t reflect well on Oxford fans.
