Legends and others

An Oxford United Legends side beat Kidlington Legends 7-1 at Yarnton Road this afternoon. The game was a memorial match for Terry Wiffen, a left winger who played for Kidlington, Oxford City, Abingdon Town, and a host of minor clubs, including Swindon Town. Wiffen, who went on to be Kidlington's assistant manager and a behind-the-scenes stalwart, died on 18 September after suffering from a brain tumour.

This afternoon's game, played in sweltering sunshine, was mainly a walkabout for a collection of players of whom some might be considered legends, although probably the most legendary player among them was sporting the green of Kidlington, as Garry Parker was one of the classiest players on show. United included a number of players who never even played for the first team, such as Eddie Denton, John Harvey-Lynch, Mark West, Owen McGovern, and others. Phil Whitehead, who is a legend, played in goal for the first half, while Alan Judge, another legend, was in goal for the second half. Oxford took an early lead when Chris Allen was at the far post to nod home a Peter Rhoades-Brown cross. Shortly after, Kidlington equalised, but it wasn't long before United restored the lead when Harvey-Lynch headed home from a corner. Thereafter, Oxford were the only team likely to score, and they duly did when Les Robinson, who looked the fittest player on the park, burst clean through to finish calmly. Some bloke called Tom added a fourth before half time.

The second half was an altogether more sedate affair, as heat, exhaustion, and old age took its toll. Allen scored the best goal of the game with a delicious chip over the Kidlington goalie from the edge of the area. Later, some chap called Andy scored, and then Allen completed his hat trick with a run from deep and a neat finish. That was it for the scoring, and indeed the game.

In other news, United have confirmed that they will play a pre-season friendly at home to Queens Park Rangers on Saturday 19 July. There are also unconfirmed reports of a home friendly against Cheltenham on Saturday 2 August. In player news, former United duo Simon Weatherstone and Stuart Douglas have been released by Weymouth, but Jamie Cook has signed a new deal with Crawley Town.
