Stockport won for the first time in Oxford thanks to a first-half goal, against the run of play, from George Donnelly. United had earlier squandered a good opportunity to take the lead as Matt Green wasted yet another one-on-one, and in the second half the Us battered the visitors, but were undone by a combination of decent defending, poor finishing, inept refereeing, and rank bad luck. Like the defeat to Bury earlier in the season, Oxford can feel aggrieved to have come away with nothing, but like that game the Us need to learn to take their chances when they are presented.
Chris Wilder retained the same starting line-up that had won 2-0 at Hereford United last weekend, as Jake Wright remains sidelined with his back injury, meaning Mark Creighton retained his place at the centre of defence alongside Harry Worley. The first change came seven minutes into the second half, when Green was replaced by Alfie Potter. With quarter of an hour remaining Sam Deering came on for Josh Payne, and four minutes from time Creighton went off for Richie Baker.
The first real opportunity of the game came after quarter of an hour, when a threaded through-ball from Simon Heslop sent Green racing towards goal. Instead of shooting early, Green opted to take the ball around Matt Glennon, allowing two covering defenders to crowd him out of the ball.
