Moody rumours unconfirmed
Those Paul Moody rumours, reported somewhat scathingly yesterday, refuse to go away, and Oxford United haven't helped. Normally speculation of this sort is laughingly dismissed by the club with some caustic and sarcastic comment to help them on their way, but when questioned about Paul Moody United refused to deny that there was a grain of truth in this piece of gossip. They didn't confirm it either, of course, but the lack of a denial could lead people to believe, accurately or otherwise, that there might be some substance to this story. Meanwhile Millwall have signed striker Steve Claridge and have also taken Giovanni Savarese on a three month contract, so perhaps they are feeling a bit top-heavy up front?
Savagery in midfield
Midfielder Dave Savage eventually put pen to paper this afternoon and signed a two year contract with United. Savage was one of the Cobblers more expensive signings, costing £80,000 from Millwall, but he refused a new contract with them at the end of last season, wanting more than Northampton were prepared to offer. Savage has been given the squad number 4 and Mark Wright has suggested that there might still be two more signings, a goalkeeper and a striker, before the start of the season on Saturday.
Dave Beasant is currently thinking over a move to Portsmouth, who require goalkeeping cover following the death of 'keeper Aaron Flahaven in a car crash at the weekend. Flahaven was a good friend of Beasant's, who says that he doesn't want to further his career in this manner. But Beasant, who was apparently on the verge of signing a three-month contract with Birmingham, was upset at Brum's manager Trevor Francis revealing Pompey's interest and so it looks unlikely that he'll be going Blueswards.
