The Oxford United squad reported back for pre-season training today, fully refreshed from their summer break (hopefully). Included among the permanent squad members was Luke Foster, who signed a one-year contract last week, and four triallists hoping to impress Jim Smith and earn themselves a deal for the forthcoming season.
The most prominent among them is Frenchman Alex Jeannin, who was released by Hereford United in April. Jeannin plays at left back, a position that has caused some concern for United recently, and has experience with Exeter City and Darlington too. Another French player, midfielder Kalusivikako Ngoma, is also on trial. Ngoma played for Darlington last season and, like Jeannin, is 29 years old.
The other two triallists are Joel Ledgister, a winger who played for Gravesend & Northfleet last season, on loan from Southend United, and Phil Trainer, a midfielder from Moor Green (who have now merged with Solihull Borough to become Solihull Moors). In addition, Gregg Coombes, who played for United against Rushden & Diamonds last season, on loan from Cardiff City, has been invited to join United for pre-season, while the club is waiting to hear from his former Cardiff colleague Mike Corcoran about his intentions.
Smith has revealed that he has had no enquiries about the transfer-listed Andy Burgess, a situation that does not displease him. On his day Burgess can be the most creative player around, and he is certainly someone who would be very difficult to replace, however much money might be freed up by him leaving. Meanwhile, Steve Basham, released by United at the end of last season, has joined Exeter on a two-year contract.
