Stockport County
Just to clear up any confusion, there isn't actually a county of Stockport. Stockportshire, like Port Vale, doesn't exist. Stockport is, in fact, a suburb of Manchester Airport and is irredeemably northern. On the plus side, it does mean you can get four pints and still get change from a fiver (or it did 15 years ago, which is the last time Rage Online stepped foot in the place).
The club was formed way back in 1883, originally named Heaton Norris Rovers, changing their name to Stockport County in 1890 after the newly formed County Borough of Stockport, which was merged into Greater Manchester in 1972. Cometh the new Century, cometh Football League status, as Stockport were elected to the Second Division in May 1900 after winning the Lancashire League title. They failed to be re-elected in 1904, spending one season in the Lancashire Combination, which they won at the first attempt and were readmitted into the League.
Stockport finished bottom of Division Two in 1921, and were relegated into the new Division Three North, which they won at the first attempt. They didn't last long back in the Second and were back in the Third North in 1926. In 1934 they set a still extant Football League record when beating Halifax Town 13-0 and three years later they were Third North champions, coming straight back down the following sesaon. In 1958, when the bottom divisions were restructured, Stockport joined the new Division Three, but they were relegated to the Fourth Division at the end of the first season.
The Hatters were Fourth Division champions in 1967, but found themselves back in the basement three seasons later. They were back in Division Three in 1991 and reached the play-off final the following season, losing 2-1 to Peterborough United at Wembley, with Kevin Francis scoring their goal. They made the play-off semi-finals the next season, losing to Port Vale, and the following season again made the play-off final, this time going down 2-1 to Burnley. They eventually achieved promotion to Division Two in 1997 when they finished second and they reached the semi-final of the League Cup in the same season.
County were relegated in 2002, and in 2005 amassed just 25 points as they dropped back into the basement. In 2008 Stockport won the Fourth Division play-offs, beating Rochdale 3-2 at Wembley to earn promotion. In April 2009 Stockport went into administration and at the end of last season they were relegated back to the basement, which is where we find them now and is how come we've written all this rubbish. It was announced today that a consortium calling itself the 2015 Consortium (obviously confused as to the year) has taken over Stockport County.
Stockport moved to Edgeley Park in 1902 and the ground has a current capacity of 10,832, with room for 1,356 away supporters in the seated, but uncovered, Railway End. Last season's ticket prices were
