On This Day |
January 16th hasn't really been a particularly significant day in United's history. In 1967 United lost 1-0 at non-league Bedford Town in an FA Cup third round replay. At the same stage of the competition in 1996 a long-range Stuart Massey strike beat Millwall at the Manor. |
United's reserves continued their impressive run with a win at the New Den this afternoon, Manny Omoyinmi scoring the only goal of the game. The reserves line-up included a first game back for Ian McGuckin, who lined up alongside Lee Jarman in defence. Steve Anthrobus partnered Manny up front, with Richard Knight in goal.
As speculated yesterday on Rage Online the deal to buy Barnsley defender Kevin Austin for £75,000 has been called off due to the player's dodgy achilles tendon. The search for a new left back now continues although it is doubtful now whether someone will be bought in enough time for the Bournemouth game. Bearing in mind Brentford's situation the U's could do worse than go back to Griffin Park with an increased offer for Paul Gibbs.
Better news as far as Joe Kinnear and David Kemp are concerned is that Aston Villa have agreed to extend Neil Cutler's loan spell by another month. Cutler's loan was actually due to finish after the game at Dean Court but the player said “I'll probably extend my loan and see how it goes from there”. Cutler trains just once a week with United, spending the rest of his time training with Villa's fitness coach Paul Barron.
