Even though the last, disastrous, season has only just concluded, United are already starting to prepare for next season. The search for new players, to replace the seven whose contracts are not being renewed plus others who may leave, has already begun, with Jim Smith warning us not to expect any news too quickly. Most players are contracted to stay with their clubs until the end of June, and will be using that time to sort out the best deal for themselves, which may not include a move to Oxford United, surprisingly. However, we remain optimistic that the Us are a more attractive proposition than most other non-league and Fourth Division clubs, and that Smith is the right manager to attract decent players to the club. Of course, those players currently at the club who are asking for more money than they are currently on will doubtless be given short shrift, if they are given any shrift at all.
One factor that will undoubtedly work in Oxford’s favour is their new agreement with Hellenic League club Milton United, just off the A34 at the Didcot turn. United are to make Milton their permanent training headquarters, spending heavily to upgrade the existing three pitches and associated facilities. This will be the weekday base for the players, and is indicative of a more professional approach that is slowly permeating the club.
While the club is also trying to arrange its programme of pre-season friendlies, one match has been confirmed. United will visit Eastleigh on Wednesday 26 July. This game is in all likelihood a consequence of the deal that saw Neville Roach join the club on loan in December, for an unsuccessful spell that saw Roach make just two full appearances, and a further five from the bench.
