A last minute wonder-goal from substitute Mark Rawle rescued an unlikely point for United, who had found themselves a goal down after 21 minutes after Andy Duncan had headed home from a Cambridge corner. United dominated much of the possession throughout the game, but only Scott McNiven drew a save from Shaun Marshall as the Us struggled to create. At the other end a Luke Guttridge shot thumped against the bar with Andy Woodman well beaten.
Ian Atkins made two changes from the side that lost at Colchester last week. Left wingback Matt Robinson returned after his one game suspension, with Jon Ashton moving back to his traditional centre-back role and Dave Waterman dropping to the bench. Up front there was a surprise as Jefferson Louis was preferred in the starting line-up to Julian Alsop, who came on for Louis six minutes into the second half. Chris Hackett replaced James Hunt in the 67th minute and Atkins’ last throw of the dice in trying to salvage a point was bringing on Rawle for Scott McNiven. It worked!
The referee was the hapless Scott Matthieson, who capped a dismal performance by producing undeserved yellow cards for Louis and Hunt, and a well-deserved on for Woody. The attendance of 4,430 included a healthy contingent of 925 Yellows. We have been promised a match report for tomorrow.
United stay third as a result of this point, but move above Doncaster who lost 1-0 at York, who went tenth, three places above Cambridge. Hull stayed top despite losing 3-1 at Huddersfield, who moved up to eighth as a result, while Mansfield jumped above the Us after winning 2-0 at Carlisle, who unsurprisingly remain bottom. Yeovil have gone fifth after their 4-0 drubbing of Southend, who are just one place above Carlisle. Seventh placed Swansea visit Northampton on Monday. United’s next opponents, Macclesfield Town, drew 2-2 at home to Scunthorpe.
