Gas naturally

Bristol Rovers visit the KasStad tomorrow in an eagerly anticipated clash. United have two successive wins, are undefeated in 2005, and have caught up with Rovers on points, with only Oxford’s diabolical goal difference separating the sides.

United have pretty much a full squad to choose from, with only Paul Wanless doubtful, and so Ramon Diaz and Horacio Rodrigues face the choice of whether or not to change a winning line-up. We suspect that they might not, although the temptation will be there to bring Jamie Brooks into the side, possibly with Matt Robinson dropping back to his usual fullback position and Mateo Corbo moving into the centre of defence, leaving Jon Ashton or Leo Roget to make way. Or maybe not.

Rovers feature a few Oxford old-boys, although Richard Walker has come down with flu and is unlikely to feature, and Dave Savage has missed Rovers’ last four games, Stuart Campbell taking his place. James Hunt should play though. Rovers’ manager Ian Atkins also has some obscure link with United, from the dim and distant past, but we can’t remember what it is.

This match is likely to be more reminiscent of a derby than the Wycombe match was, with Rovers probably bringing almost as many supporters as Wanderers did. Unfortunately, the Oxford supporters are probably more likely to concentrate on dissing the former Oxford people in the Rovers entourage, or on giving referee Joe Ross (for yes, ’tis him) some abuse, than on encouraging the Mighty Yellows. Let’s hope that it ain’t so. For the record, we predict a 1-1 draw. No reason, it’s just easier than having to think about it too hard.
