Full of Gas

From the Rage Online newsdesk Friday, October 1st, 2004

So, it’s off to the Memorial Ground tomorrow for United, in their first game against Bristol Rovers since Ian Atkins jumped ship (or was pushed overboard, depending on which version of events you choose to believe). United will be desperate to get their season back on track following Wednesday’s LDV debacle (Rovers progressed to the second round at Kidderminster’s expense), and Graham Rix will be looking for the same kind of response as the players gave against Bury following the Yeovil shambles. Hopefully soon the players will be able to produce decent performances without having to be embarrassed first.

There are still injury worries over Jon Ashton, Leo Roget, and Terry Parker, defenders all, while Barry Quinn isn’t yet ready to resume first team action. Mark Rawle may make the bench, but following Tom Winters performance on Wednesday that’s probably the best he can hope for. Chris Hackett surely played himself into contention for a starting place and, if Rix has any balls, he will replace the underwhelming Lee Bradbury with Steve Basham up front. It might be worth putting Bradbury into midfield in place of Rob Wolleaston, who has also disappointed in the last two or three matches. Paul Wanless is likely to get a game in midfield as he impressed after coming off the bench against both Bury and Exeter.

Rovers have an injury worry over former United striker Richard Walker, who limped out of the Kidderminster match with a knee problem, while James Hunt, who was sent off at Northampton for violent conduct, will start the first of his three-match ban, against which Rovers unsuccessfully appealed. Craig Disley, who played his first game for Rovers against Kiddy, could feature again.

With both teams level on points, and Rovers slightly ahead on goal difference, this game could prove significant for both clubs, neither of whom will want to be left too far behind the front-runners as the season approaches a quarter way through. Hopefully United supporters will get behind the side tomorrow, and cheer them on rather than just use the opportunity for a 90-minute Atkins-abuse session. Mind you, even with that support this is going to be a difficult game, and Rage Online can’t see beyond a 1-0 defeat for United. Sorry.
