Former Iron Man joins Oxford

Sam Slocombe has become Oxford United’s fourth summer signing after joining the Us from Scunthorpe United.

The former Iron goalkeeper, who turned 27 last week, has put pen to paper on a two-year deal at the Kassam Stadium.

Slocombe, who started his career with Lincoln City, made over 130 appearances for Scunthorpe during his seven year spell, becoming the club’s longest serving player before leaving Glanford Park.

He said: “I have enjoyed my time at Scunthorpe but this is a very exciting new challenge for me at Oxford.

“I came and had a look round and was impressed by everything I saw, and everything that the club is building towards.

“Now it’s down to me to come in, work hard in pre-season and hopefully be part of a successful squad that challenges at the top end of the table.”

Having already tied up deals for Kemar Roofe, Liam Sercombe and Ryan Taylor earlier this summer, Yellows head coach Michael Appleton was delighted with his latest acquisition: “Sam is a proven goalkeeper at this level and above and we are delighted to have him here.

“He communicates with his defence and he is an excellent shot-stopper. He is still only 27 so we think there is plenty to come from him.

“It gives us serious competition for that one position and that is something we feel we will have all the way through the team next season.”

Slocombe’s arrival means Oxford now have three contracted goalkeepers in their ranks ahead of the 2015-16 campaign, with the former Scunthorpe shot-stopper joining Ryan Clarke and Max Crocombe in the fight for the number one jersey.

However, the club’s latest business means United have now ended their negotiations with former Leeds United and Reading goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown, who played the final five games of last season.
