Fogged off

From the Rage Online newsdesk Thursday, December 21st, 2006

Last night's FA Trophy first round replay between Oxford and Lewes was called off about an hour and a half before kick off because of the foggy conditions. Although the pitch was playable, the freezing fog, that had hung around the ground all day, meant that when the floodlights were switched on there was very poor visibility, leaving referee Simon Hooper no alternative but to postpone the match. The game has been rearranged for Tuesday 9 January.

This means that United's next fixture is the home clash with Woking on Boxing Day. With fewer than 300 tickets remaining for the home sections of the ground, and with Woking having sold over 200 of their 300 allocation, a new attendance record for a standard Conference fixture will almost certainly be set, beating the previous record of 9,432 set by Lincoln City for their game against Wycombe Wanderers as long ago as 2 May 1988. This all-ticket match is likely to be a sell out, so fingers crossed that the weather behaves itself for this one. A match preview will be written nearer the time, probably on Christmas Day in a drunken haze.

Meanwhile, our report yesterday that Darren Patterson was set to become the new manager of Brentford has, predictably, been proven wrong, as the Bees have appointed coach Scott Fitzgerald (not the crap striker who we had on loan last season, and who is currently playing for AFC Wimbledon, nor the author of The Great Gatsby, who is currently dead). Patto was Brentford's first choice, but they were unable to agree terms, and so he remains United's Youth Team Coach, luckily for us.
