Fever stung by The Hornets

Watford 4 Raging Fever 1

Raging Fever wasted a hatful of opportunities in front of goal as they slumped to another away defeat at the hands of Watford.

In an open start to the contest, Fever squandered two golden opportunities to take the lead against their hosts, who boasted a mixture of youth and experience. Nick Wehmeier blasted over the crossbar when released by 'Gobby' Gale, before Thom Airs lifted his identical chance over the target minutes later.

If Fever's early finishing was sloppy, the home side were clinical in the extreme. Before the half hour mark, the Oxford side were three goals down and in a state of shock. Firstly, a long ball was not dealt with by the Fever defence, allowing Watford's pacey striker to race clear before slotting low past Joel Harrison.

The same player repeated the trick soon after as Fever were caught on the counter-attack. A corner was cleared from Watford's penalty area and was picked up by the home striker. Advancing at pace and with men supporting, Fever were quickly outnumbered at the back. With Geoff Carter unsure whether to engage the player or mark the support, the striker hurtled forwards before doubling his tally.

As Fever pushed for a route back into the match, Watford repeated the trick moments before the half hour. A long ball evaded the visitor's defence and Harrison was left stranded as his guard was breached for the third time.

The frustration was getting a little too much for some of Fever's players, with Pat Wehmeier coming over all Wayne Rooney when presented with a simple choice between chasing a football or an opposition winger to discuss their varying beliefs.

After the handbags were given back to the WAGs (of which there are none, as very few Fever players can attract women and those who can aren't allowed to play football in Watford on a Saturday morning), Fever came agonisingly close to reducing the arrears. Airs' corner was headed goalwards, but Dan Curtis was unable to get sufficient contact on the ball to force it past the numerous bodies on the line.
