Fever cut diamonds into shape

A squad of six hardy Fever souls travelled the short distance to Rushden to play a six-a-side game in a new fixture to be added to the calendar. Upon arriving, it was obvious that the facilities provided would be of a high standard, with a modern sports centre provided for changing and the Astroturf pitch being of high quality. The latter caused a few problems for the Fever team as the true bounce and lack of bobbles foxed those used to playing in the Horspath arena.

Rushden, being full of youth, started brightly, taking an early lead, and after ten minutes Fever were 3-2 down and starting to bicker amongst themselves. This was compounded when Butler was lobbed by a speculative punt from 40 yards (not for the first time in a Fever shirt!) to make the score 4-2. Fortunately the Fever team rallied and swiftly pulled the keeper out of goal to bolster the defence. This tactical masterplan reaped instant gains as Fever scored nine without reply, with particularly fine striking by Rob Muskett and James Simpson. A late goal in the half from Rushden made the half-time score 11-5.

The second half began much the same as the first had, with Rushden again showing endeavour which was rewarded with a few goals to make the situation less comnfortable for the Fever team. Some excellent work though from makeshift keeper Matthews in goal, who surprised everyone (including himself) with his shot stopping abilities, meant that the margin between the sides was maintained and with fifteen minutes to go Fever still led 16-10.
