Dreyer's prayer to be a player scotched by nay sayers

According to today's Oxford Mail John Dreyer's attempts to be signed by United have been halted by the club's board which believes, not unreasonably, that the squad's current number of defenders is quite sufficient. Apparently if one of the large contingent of back-players “breaks down” in close season training then they might reconsider, and Dreyer is continuing to train with the squad.

The likeliest player whom Dreyer might replace is Darren Patterson, who has been unable to train so far and is receiving treatment for an injury at Lillieshall, but if he's okay then it looks like Dreyer will be on his way! Radio Oxford claims that Mark Wright wants Dreyer badly enough to offload one of the defenders already on the books (McGuckin? unlikely; who would buy him?). Apparently Dreyer gave a verbal undertaking to join Stevenage but then went back on it so he could join United, so if he isn't signed it could potentially jeopardise his position.
