Following on from a comment on the official Oxford United web site about an imminent “big” signing there have been strong rumours linking former United striker Dean Saunders with the club. This has been compounded by an unconfirmed report that Saunders was seen with United boss Mark Wright in an Oxford restaurant. Quite why Deano would take a massive pay cut to join Oxford, or why Oxford would want to sign a 37 year old (his birthday was last Thursday, by the way) is beyond us, but stranger things have happened.
Other veteran strikers currently available include Saunders' team-mate Stuart McCall, who is allegedly interesting Wigan, and Tony Cottee, who today turned down an approach by Cheltenham Town.
It is possible that the player referred to is Chesterfield's David Reeves, but today's Daily Star reports that the striker has turned down a £100,000 move to United.
News that a goalkeeper is one of Wright's targets has not affected former U's custodian Lance Key, whose career took another downwards turn today as he moved from Conference side Northwich Victoria to join relegated Kingstonian. Doubtless the prospect of a pre-season friendly against his former club swayed his decision.
