Cox signs

Cox signs

Youth team goalkeeper Simon Cox has signed a one year contract with United. Cox, an under-19 Eire international, signed from Reading at the start of last season and has featured regularly for both United's under-19s and reserves, impressing with his goalkeeping despite his lack of stature. With Ian McCaldon not being offered a new contract Cox will probably be United's number 2 goalie behind Andy Woodman.

Meanwhile, rumour has it that Dave Savage, the supporters' Player of the Season, has not been offered a new contract by United after his recent outburst in the Oxford Mail about out-of-contract players infuriated Firoz Kassam. Allegedly new contracts have been offered to Steve Basham, Bobby Ford and Andy Scott, but for amounts that might be considered paltry relative to their previous contracts. Play-off news

United can add Doncaster Rovers to their fixture list for next season. Dave Penney's side beat Dagenham & Redbridge 3-2, thanks to a golden goal in extra time. Dave Morley had put Doncaster 2-0 ahead, but the Daggers fought back to level the scores after Mark Stein brought them back into the game.

In the Division Three play-offs Bournemouth and Bury drew 0-0 at Gigg Lane while Lincoln beat Scunthorpe 5-3 at Sincil Bank.

Rugger buggers off?

Bristol Shoguns were today relegated from the Rugby Union Premiership (or whatever it's called), effectively ending the possibility of them groundsharing in Oxford. With Bath beating Newcastle and Bristol losing to London Irish the Shoguns find themselves bottom of the league. Their only hope is that with all the shenanigans and dodgy dealings that comprise top level rugby union in this country, Rotherham will for some reason be deprived the promotion that they won from the First Division.
