County bound

From the Rage Online newsdesk Sunday, August 29th, 2004

United visit Notts County tomorrow afternoon, looking for their first away win under Graham Rix. Indeed, Oxford haven’t won on the road this year, their last win coming at Roots Hall on December 28th. The Us will be going into this game full of confidence following yesterday’s win over Shrewsbury, not just for the result, but also for the performance, United’s best for some time. Leo Roget is a possible doubt after he was substituted towards the end of yesterday’s game with a tight hamstring, and none of David Woozley, Mark Rawle, Chris Hackett, Mark E’Beyer, Barry Quinn or Michael Alexis are fit enough to play. The big question is whether or not Graham Rix will give a full debut to Tom Winters, whose presence in the second half against the Shrews revitalised United and led to several dangerous moments. Away from home, though, Rix might take a more cautious approach.

County feature former United loanee Gavin Gordon, who is fit to play following a recent injury. They beat Lincoln 2-1 yesterday for their first league win of the season, hot on the heels of their 2-1 win at Bradford City in the League Cup. Indeed, all of County’s last four games have ended 2-1. The Magpies are lying 17th in the league, having just one home point so far.

If the win over Shrewsbury was an important result, then this match is equally vital. If Oxford could get an away win then it should really kick-start the season, on the other hand a defeat could undo all the good work we saw yesterday. Given that, Rage Online predicts a useful, but unspectacular, 1-1 draw. Call us crazy.
