Conference downers

From the Rage Online newsdesk Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

More issues in the Conference have been settled following tonight's results, with confirmation that Tamworth and Southport have both joined St Albans in relegation. Grays Athletic made light work of ten-man Kidderminster Harriers, despatching them 3-0 to lift the Essex outfit up to 16th, the top of a clutch of five clubs all on 52 points.

Also now on 52 points, two points above fourth-bottom Altrincham, are Halifax, who beat Crawley Town (another side on 52 points) 2-1. This leaves Stafford Rangers fifth from bottom, with Cambridge United one place above them. Altrincham therefore need to win their home game against Aldershot on Saturday to stay up, and hope that at least one of the teams on 52 points loses (actually, if Stafford draw Altrincham will go above them on goal difference, should Alty win).

Meanwhile, results that will hopefully be of more interest to United fans occurred in the Fourth Division. Wrexham won 1-0 at play-off challengers Shrewsbury Town to rise to 20th, three points above second-bottom Boston United, while Macclesfield lost 1-0 at home to Bristol Rovers to stay third bottom, two points above Boston. There are still two games to play in the League, with Accrington Stanley, Bury, and possibly Mansfield all still in danger of joining Torquay United in the Conference.
