Clarke signs new deal

Oxford United’s Ryan Clarke has penned a new three-year deal at the club, keeping the goalkeeper at the Kassam Stadium until 2017.

The 31-year-old is widely regarded as the most consistent player for the Yellows over the previous few seasons, making over 200 appearances since arriving from Salisbury Town back in 2009.

The shot-stopper joined United after a brief loan spell at Northwich Victoria before quickly become former manager Chris Wilder’s number one after fending off fan favourite Billy Turley within his debut season.

Clarke was man of the match in United’s goalless draw at Exeter City on Tuesday, claiming his fourth consecutive league clean sheet as a result.

Us Chairman Ian Lenagan revealed Clarke had put pen to paper on his new deal on Monday, and expressed his delight at securing his services: “Ryan has been one of the most consistent players not just for Oxford United but also in the whole of Leagues One and Two.

“He worked very hard to come back from injury last season and has a great attitude. He has improved year on year as a goalkeeper and he understands what the club is trying to build. We are very pleased that he will be around to help us progress.

“With Max Crocombe also here on a long-term deal and Wayne Brown doing an excellent job as goalkeeping coach we feel that the goalkeeping position is in very safe hands.”

Clarke’s new contract agreement is made up of two years plus an additional year option for the club.

“I am delighted to have signed” said the 31 year-old. “I have been made to feel welcome ever since I first came through the door, the fans have been brilliant with me, and the club is ambitious and always looking to move forward.

“I feel as though the next few years should be when I am in my prime as a goalkeeper and I am looking forward to those years being with Oxford. We are in a very strong position in the league and I want to be part of what is happening here.”

Meanwhile in other news, Oxford United have been nominated for two honours at the Football League Awards 2014.

The Yellows have been shortlisted for Family Club of the Year, their fourth nomination in successive seasons, and are in the running for the Digital Content category award.

It is a new gong awarded to the most creative marketing use of digital content within a football club, with the Us boasting their “This is Oxford United” video campaign which spread across special editions of matchday programmes and newspapers published as part of a special evening for business partners.

With Oxford being the only nominee from Division Four for the Digital Content honour, communications manager Chris Williams was extremely humble: “We are very proud to have been shortlisted in both categories. Everybody at the club works very hard to make it family friendly and to be in the final six in that category is a terrific achievement.

“The Digital Content award is a new category and it is great that the club has been recognised in this way. The ‘This is Oxford United’ video is outstanding work from Zack Goldman and is part of a wider campaign that the whole team behind the scenes contributed to.”
