Clarke sidelined

Oxford United goalkeeper Ryan Clarke has been ruled out for up to 10 weeks. The Us fear the goalie could be sidelined for the rest of the season, after boss Chris Wilder revealed the 30 year-old requires double shoulder surgery.

Wayne Brown deputised for the Yellows during their impressive 2-1 away victory at Bradford City on Saturday, but was at fault when centre-half Michael Duberry headed the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper to set Nahki Wells free to score a soft opening goal.

The 36 year-old player-coach has made three appearances for the Us so far this season, with manager Wilder looking to keep faith in the experienced veteran.

With over 500 games to his name, Wilder explained; “Wayne will get us through this period and if not, we’ll have to make a decision off the back of it. Wayne will pick it up. He didn’t have a lot to do (at Bradford) and he just needed that game.

“Fortunately it’s not hurt us, he just made a decision and possibly he should stay there and let Dubes (Michael Duberry) head it back.

“But after that he tipped one over the bar, he kicked well and commanded his area well.”

Youth team graduate Max Crocombe is the only other source of replacement, but is yet to make his senior debut for the Yellows.

At 19 years of age, he is regarded highly by Wilder, and is confident of Crocombe turning into a great future prospect for the club.

“Max is a young keeper who we think a lot about and we’re sure he will kick on and play senior football. You can chuck him in and he might fly, or something might happen and he might go under” he said.

“I don’t think it’s fair on him, especially because he’s not played a lot of football as well. He’s one for the future.”
