Chelsea ooze to victory

United lost 3-1 to Chelsea in the first home pre-season friendly. Gianfranco Zola seized on a lucky rebound to put the Mockneys ahead after ten minutes, but Dean Whitehead equalised direct from a free-kick 15 minutes later. The teams were level for just two minutes before Filipe Oliveira scored with a finely struck shot from 20 yards. Robert Wolleaston completed the scoring 10 minutes into the second half. The attendance was 6,856 which, considering the ticket prices and the opposition, isn't so bad.

United started with triallist David Oldfield partnering Manny Omoyinmi up front and Dave Savage playing wide on the left of a four man midfield, which featured Whitehead on the right wing and David Waterman in the centre alongside James Hunt, playing his first game at the KasStad. Also making their home debuts were fullbacks Matt Robinson on the left and Scott McNiven on the right. Andy Crosby and Matt Bound started in central defence and Andy Woodman was between the sticks. The first substitution, twenty minutes into the second half, saw Paul Powell replace Waterman. ROS Chris Hackett then came on for Manny and finally Jefferson Louis joined Oldfield up front, coming on for Deano.

Worthington Cup draw

The draw for the first round of the Worthington Cup took place at 10.00 this morning, and gives United a trip to Ashton Gate. The game against Bristol City will take place during the week commencing Sept. 9th.
