United suffered a humiliating defeat in their first proper pre-season friendly this afternoon, at Yeading’s Warren ground. The Ding beat a full Oxford team 2-0 with a goal in each half. An Oxford United youth side visited Hellenic Premier League club Ardley United, and won 1-0 thanks to a tenth minute goal from wunderkind Billy Beechers. After failing in their audacious attempt to sign Real Madrid reserve Michael Owen*, Oxford United have instead turned their attentions to Brentford midfielder Chris Hargreaves. Oxford left-back Terry Parker has been sent down. Parker has been given an 18-month sentence for his part in an assault in a Southampton night club. It’s not very often that these pages turn solemn, but Rage Online was saddened to hear of the plight of young Oakley Waterman. Oakley is six years old, and is the son of former United midfielder/defender Dave Waterman, currently at Weymouth. Early last season Oakley was diagnosed with cancer, and had to undergo major treatment.  [ more ]
