United opened the new season with a 1-0 defeat at Boston United, the only goal coming eight minutes from time by substistute Lee Thompson, just six minutes after coming on. The Hornets took the lead after just six minutes when Danny Webber was allowed too much space on the left, and his cross found the unmarked Bruce Dyer. Graham Rix today completed the final piece of his squad-building jigsaw with the signing of right-back Lee Molyneaux. The former Portsmouth player, who was frequently in the same side as Chris Tardif and Terry Parker, has signed a one-year contract after impressing Rix in many of United’s pre-season friendlies. A young Oxford United XI drew 1-1 with Banbury United at the Spencer Stadium this evening, in the latest pre-season friendly. Former United youth player Howard Forinton opened the scoring for the home side, slipping the ball past the onrushing Bradie Clarke before firing home, just two minutes before half-time. United went down 5-1 to a quite superior Ipswich side this evening, despite taking an early lead. Oxford went ahead in the eighth minute when Steve Basham lashed the ball past Kelvin Davis following some good link-up play with Tommy Mooney.
