Burns makes deadline move

Oxford United have wrapped up their second signing of the day after forward Wes Burns joined the Division Four club on loan.

The 20 year-old pacy striker arrives from Division Three leaders Bristol City on a youth loan deal until the end of the season.

Burns has made six first-team appearances for Steve Cotterill’s Robins this campaign after coming through the ranks at Ashton Gate.

The Wales Under-21 international has already faced the Us this season after coming off the bench for City in Oxford’s 2-1 victory in the first round of the Capital One Cup earlier this season.

Burns, who can play through the middle or on the wing, had a previous loan spell at Conference outfit Forest Green Rovers last year, scoring once in six games for the club.

Head Coach Michael Appleton was delighted with his new signing: “We have been chasing Wes for a long time and it is great to get him in to the squad.

“He is fast, he has bags of energy and he works very hard for the team. He has an eye for goal and a great attitude and I am sure he is going to be a really good addition.

“Will Hoskins is still a few weeks away from playing and James Roberts is out for the next three or four weeks so we needed to strengthen up front and the fact that Wes can play in two or three positions across the front line is a massive bonus for us.”

Burns completed his move to the Kassam Stadium just hours after fellow striker John Campbell joined Appleton’s side from Jarrow Roofing.
