Boston stump United

From the Rage Online newsdesk Friday, April 9th, 2004

Oxford and Boston fought out a disappointing goalless draw at the KasStad this afternoon, United’s fourth consecutive game without a win. Despite dominating much of the game, United lacked the killer instinct, and didn’t make enough chances to find the winning goal. Sometimes Oxford seemed to be trying too hard, and at other times there was a reluctance to shoot when in good positions, so United only have themselves to blame for not beating a stubborn, but not particularly inspiring, Boston side.

Yet again, Graham Rix made several changes to the starting line-up, bringing back Andy Woodman in goal in place of Simon Cox. For all that he had to do this afternoon, Woodman might as well have stayed on the bench. Scott McNiven returned to the right-back berth, with Dave Waterman joining Cox as a non-playing substitute. Danny Brown replaced the injured Matt Robinson at left back, for his first league start since mid-September. Richard Walker came back into the side, alongside Steve Basham, instead of Mark Rawle, and Courtney Pitt was also brought back, with Paul Wanless suffering from the Mansfield match. Pitt lasted until the 68th minute before he was substituted for Rawle, and nine minutes later ROS Chris Hackett was taken off to be replaced by Matt Bound, causing quite a major reshuffle to United’s side. With five minutes left Lee Steele came on for Walker.

The referee was Kevin Wright, who United supporters might remember from our 2-1 home win over Hull. He also officiated in Boston’s 2-1 win against swindon in the LDV Vans Trophy. He had a very good game, only making one mistake when he booked James Hunt for an apparently clean tackle. The attendance was a slightly disappointing 6,050. Hopefully we’ll get a match report posted up before too long.

The point lifts United up to sixth, one point above Lincoln who play Swansea tomorrow. Oxford are now six points above Yeovil and Northampton, both of whom have two games in hand over the Yellows. Fourth placed Torquay are now just one point ahead of Oxford after losing 2-1 at Bury.
