On This Day |
No-one who was up the Manor on this day in 1971 will forget the events at the fourth round FA Cup tie against Watford. During a goalmouth scramble in front of the London Road with United on the attack a section of the wall at the front of the packed terrace collapsed, forcing many people onto the pitch and a lengthy delay to the game, which ended 1-1. Fortunately the worst injury was only a broken leg. Ken Skeen scored United’s goal in front of a crowd of 17,814. Eleven years later in another FA Cup 4th round tie Third Division United were beating First Division Brighton 3-0 at the Goldstone Ground with goals from Keith Cassells and two from Peter Foley. A further eleven years elapsed before United visited the Abbey Stadium to play Cambridge United in the Second Division and drew 2-2, courtesy of two extraordinary long range strikes from left back Mike Ford. |
In Division Two tonight swindon’s game at Colchester was postponed whilst Luton, who have now played a game more than Oxford, went down 2-0 at Oldham. Jermaine Defoe scored for the tenth successive game in Bournemouth’s win at Cambridge, so he was obviously glad that Saturday’s game was postponed so that he had a chance to grab his record!
