Austin allegations

On This Day
On January 14th 1954 United pulled off one of their greatest FA Cup giant-killings, beating Third Division (North) Stockport County 1-0 in front of a Manor crowd of 9,955. The goal was scored by Bob Peart. In 1972's third round United hosted Liverpool on the same date but were comprehensively beaten 3-0 in front of 18,000. On the 15th January 1993 United went to Prenton Park for a Division Two match but were beaten 4-0 by Tranmere. The following season two goals from the profligate Nick Cusack ensured a 2-1 win over Southend at the Manor. Jan 14th 1995 saw United go into a two goal lead at Twerton Park, courtesy of two Mark Druce goals. Druce missed out on his hat-trick by hitting the bar before Bristol Rovers struck back to win 3-2 as United were obviously practising for this season. Last season saw United get a draw at Cardiff thanks to Matt Murphy's spectacular opening goal.

Austin allegations

The deal to bring Barnsley's Kevin Austin to the Manor looks like it has fallen through. The player failed his medical, a scan showing a problem, and Joe Kinnear went back to Barnsley to try and renegotiate the £75,000 deal to avoid bringing another player with Ian McGuckin's problems to the Manor. It would appear that Barnsley's new manager Nigel Spackman was either unwilling or unable to reach a solution satisfactory to Kinnear, but United's Director of Football claims to have another couple of players lined up.

Meanwhile Kinnear is also negotiating with Aston Villa to extend Neil Cutler's loan spell, due to expire after last Saturday's win over Walsall. Should Villa desire Cutler to return Kinnear has said that he has another Premiership 'keeper ready to take his place. Rage Online believes that this might be a West Ham reserve.

There are unsubstantiated rumours that Huddersfield have offered United £300,000 for Joey Beauchamp and Phil Gray. We assume that, in the absence of any real evidence, this is totally spurious. We can't see United accepting this offer and don't believe that either player would make this move at this time, or that the Terriers would really want them anyway.
