Angels in the outfield

From the Rage Online newsdesk Friday, December 14th, 2007

Oxford United's cup campaigns continue tomorrow, with the visit of Tonbridge Angels in the FA Trophy first round. [@opponent]tonbridge[/@opponent][@connection]tonbridge[/@connection] United have failed to score in their last three games, and will be desperate to return to winning ways after two successive defeats, at Northwich Victoria last Saturday, and at Southend United in the FA Cup second round replay at Roots Hall on Tuesday. United are likely to take this competition seriously (at least, more seriously than the Setanta Shield, in which United travel to Aldershot next Saturday), as it is a tournament which the Us could consider winnable, and with the incentive of a possible Wembley final. The attendance tomorrow won't be huge, and while it is unlikely to feature at the very top of this list, it will probably be in the top five.

Darren Patterson will have a reasonably strong squad at his disposal. Billy Turley, who received his fifth yellow card of the season at Southend is available, but will miss the Aldershot match (or the replay of this game, should it end in a draw, which is scheduled for Tuesday). Alex Jeannin is available again after missing the Southend game through suspension, while Carl Pettefer also returns to the squad after serving a three-match ban for his dismissal at Kidderminster Harriers. In addition, the midfield could be boosted by the return to fitness of Danny Rose. Up front, Rob Duffy will be looking to start a game for the first time since 30 September, against York City, but who his partner will be is anyone's guess, with Yemi Odubade, Ashley Barnes, Gary Twigg, and Alex Fisher all hopeful of a place.

The Angels, who changed their name from Tonbridge FC in honour of their former ground, are currently 19th in the Isthmian Premier League, occupying the final relegation place. Their last game was a 2-2 home draw with Billericay Town, with Tonbridge coming back from 2-0 down thanks to two second-half penalties. In fact, Tonbridge haven't won for five games, despite only having lost once in their last four. They are anticipating bringing more supporters than they get for their normal home games, as they play one of the biggest games for years, but Rage Online believes, possibly naively, that United will be too strong for the Kent part-timers, and we can foresee Oxford winning with a couple of goals to spare.
