Terra incognita

From the Rage Online newsdesk Sunday, August 27th, 2006

United visit Weymouth tomorrow for the first time in 45 years, for an early top-of-the-table clash. Following yesterday’s results, Oxford have overtaken the Terras at the top of the table, as United’s 5-1 win over Northwich Victoria took them to the top on goal difference, Weymouth winning 1-0 at Kidderminster.

Jim Smith would appear to have no new injury worries following yesterday’s routine victory, although John Dempster is still likely to be unavailable. Chris Willmott played the full 90 minutes for his first match of the season, and appeared to suffer no ill-effects, while Rob Duffy and Gavin Johnson, who both scored, were substituted with half an hour remaining to ensure that they will be suitably refreshed for tomorrow’s game.

United have sold out of their allocation of 1,962 tickets, while a similar number of home fans are expected to attend to contribute to what should be an excellent atmosphere. Weymouth feature former U Simon Weatherstone in midfield, although Matt Bound and Dave Waterman have both moved on. They get their nickname from the fact that their kit used to be terracotta, which must have been awfully heavy to run around in. Following yesterday’s game (not just the result, but also the manner in which it was achieved) Rage Online is obscenely optimistic about this match, so much so that we’re tempted to predict a United win. But we won’t. We will, however, not temper our optimism too much, and we’ll go for that old favourite, a 1-1 draw.
