Terras top the table

From the Rage Online newsdesk Saturday, August 19th, 2006

Weymouth have gone back to the top of the Conference table following their 2-1 home win over Cambridge United this afternoon. Chukkie Eribenne gave the south coast side a first-half lead, which was increased after the interval by Ben Smith. Robbie Simpson pulled a goal back for Cambridge, but they were unable to find an equaliser. This result leaves both Weymouth and Oxford as the only two Conference sides with maximum points, and both have a goal difference of +4, but the Terras have scored six goals while United have only managed five so far.

Grays Athletic are in third place, two points behind Oxford, after their 2-0 win at Halifax, who are now fifth from bottom, one place below Cambridge who also only have one point to their name. Exeter City’s 2-1 win over Altrincham lifts the Grecians to fourth, leaving Alty down in 14th place, while Stafford Rangers are 5th after they beat 18th-placed Southport 1-0. The final team on seven points is York City, who won 1-0 at 13th-placed Gravesend & Northfleet.

Crawley Town remain bottom of the table, but they won their third successive game 3-2 at Stevenage Borough, the early favourites languishing in 21st place, still without a point. This is a formidable achievement by Crawley, who are likely to go out of business at a creditors’ meeting on 30 August. Also pointless are second-bottom Tamworth, who were hammered 4-0 at 7th-placed Dagenham & Redbridge, and third-bottom Forest Green Rovers, who were beaten 2-0 at Rushden & Diamonds. This was the relegated club’s first points, and the win lifts them up to 15th.

United’s next opponents, on Saturday, are Northwich Victoria. Northwich lie in 16th place after they were beaten 1-0 at home by Kidderminster, a result that lifts the Harriers up to 12th place. The day’s highest scoring match was at Saint Albans, in 10th place. They lost 5-3 at home to 8th-placed Aldershot. The day’s other fixture, between 17th-placed Woking and 9th-placed Morecambe, ended ni a 1-1 draw, with both goals coming in stoppage time.
