Early Turley in the hurly-burly

From the Rage Online newsdesk Friday, June 30th, 2006

Following yesterday’s relatively hectic transfer activity, there was only one announcement made by Oxford United today. Out of contract goalkeeper Billy Turley signed a two-year contract, getting in ahead of his colleague Chris Tardif, who is also expected to renew his contract at the club.

Manager Jim Smith earlier told the Oxford Times that he expected four new faces, plus the two out-of-contract goalkeepers and a couple of triallists, to have joined the club prior to the start of pre-season training this Monday. Whether this means that we can expect some activity over the weekend, or have to wait until Monday for further announcements, isn’t clear. On signing his new contract, Turley made the usual positive comments that are expected, but, like Barry Quinn yesterday, went beyond that in praising the new regime.

A former United goalkeeper, Jim Barron, who played for the Us in the late 1960s and early 70s, has moved from Wycombe Wanderers to Northampton Town, where he will continue in his role as goalkeeping coach. Other former United players on the move include Jude Stirling, who has joined his former boss from Lincoln, Keith Alexander, at Peterborough, and Simon Weatherstone has joined Conference National outfit Weymouth. Meanwhile, Malcolm Elias, United’s former Youth Team coach, has left a similar role at Southampton to head up Liverpool’s academy. Presumably this means that some of United’s better youth talent may stay with the club, unlike Dexter Blackstock, JP Mills, and Sean Rudd, who were all persuaded by Elias to join Southampton.
