Shortly after rejecting Oxford’s offer of a reduced contract, Tommy Mooney has now signed for fourth division rivals Wycombe Wanderers. Mooney, 33, was United’s leading scorer last season with 15 goals, but was rumoured to be earning shitloads, and was certainly one of the highest paid players at the club.
While many Oxford supporters might affect unconcern about losing Mooney, there is little doubt that he needs to be replaced, hopefully by someone who doesn’t have such a public falling out with his strike colleague Craig Davies. The biggest concern for Oxford about this news is the near inevitability of Mooney scoring against United next season.
Another old boy whom United will face next season is former centre-half and manager Mark Wright. The former England international was yesterday revealed as the new manager of Peterborough United, relegated from the third division last season. Wright replaces Barry Fry who, as owner of the Posh, sacked himself towards the end of the season. Wright has been without a club since his sacking by Chester at the start of last season.
