Oxford reveal Austria excursion

Oxford United are flying off to Austria this summer as part of their pre-season preparations for next season.

The Us will jet off to Austria following their first pre-season match against Didcot Town on Saturday, July 11, to enjoy a week-long stay in Europe.

United have confirmed they will play Austrian Bundesliga outfit SC Wiener Neustadt on Tuesday, July 14, having held a training camp around 40 miles south of Vienna in north-east Austria.

It is the first time Oxford, who have signed Kemar Roofe, Liam Sercombe and Ryan Taylor so far this summer, have gone abroad since their tour of the USA back in 2012.

SC Wiener Neustadt play in Austria’s top-flight, although they are currently bottom of the table, despite last Sunday’s impressive goalless draw away to second-placed SK Rapid Vienna.

Ahead of Oxford’s European pre-season tie, head coach Michael Appleton said: “It’s a big part of our pre-season and one we are all very excited about.

“We went out to look at the facilities and discuss the arrangements and were really impressed. It is a chance to get away together as a squad for a week, make sure the new boys feel part of everything and get some serious work done just before the new season.

“I am sure there will be a number of Oxford fans looking to come out and watch the game and it is a week we are looking forward to.”

United confirmed they have been working closely with OxVox and the Yellow Army to produce a ‘Fans Guide’ for the Austria trip, which can be downloaded from the official club website.

For the loyal Us fans who will flock out to Europe this July with the Yellows, they will be invited to attend an open training session at the club’s training camp on Wednesday, July 15, with the opportunity to meet the players and coaching staff.

Oxford’s trip to Austria clears up the Division Four side’s pre-season schedule, with fixtures against Didcot, Woking, Eastleigh and Coventry City all set in stone this summer.
