Wright call? Captain signs new Oxford deal

Captain Jake Wright has signed a new two-year-deal at Oxford United as the club announced their retained list following the 2014-2015 season.

The 29-year-old defender, who has made 216 appearances for the Us since joining from Brighton and Hove Albion back in 2009, joins midfielder Danny Rose and goalkeeper Max Crocombe in extending their contracts with the Yellows.

Oxford have taken up a one-year extension in Rose’s current deal, meanwhile the club have triggered a two-year extension in Crocombe’s contract following his impressive loan stint at non-league outfit Nuneaton Town.

The trio celebrate new deals at the Kassam Stadium alongside left-back Joe Skarz, who penned a new three-year-deal only last week.

United head coach Michael Appleton had nothing but praise for the Oxford skipper: “Jake is a really good player as well as being a natural leader, on and off the pitch.

“People maybe don’t see what an important role he plays behind the scenes but he has the respect of everyone at the club as well as the players around him and we are very happy that he has committed his future here.

“He is a terrific defender, gives us balance because he is naturally left sided, and I am sure he will be an important player again for us next season.”

In addition; Oxford have offered talented youngsters Sam Long, Aidan Hawtin and Sam Humphreys extended contracts.

The club also revealed that they are still in negotiations with goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown and defensive midfielder Andy Whing, although the latter is discussing a new role at the Division Four club after contemplating retirement.

On the other hand, Oxford have told six players that they will not be rewarded with new deals this summer, effectively meaning they are now free to leave the club.

Defenders Matt Bevans and Jon Meades, midfielders Josh Shama and Jeremy Balmy, plus strikers John Campbell and Will Hoskins have all been released.

Appleton added: “Danny Rose has shown a fantastic attitude and gives us options in midfield, and Max impressed everyone during his loan at Nuneaton this season.

“We have also offered Sam Long, Aidan Hawtin and Sam Humphreys longer contracts and that can only be good news for the future of the football club.

“We would also like to thank all of the lads who have been released for their hard work and efforts and wish them well for the future.”
