MacDonald on verge of Oxford move

Oxford United have agreed a deal to sign Burton Albion forward Alex MacDonald.

The 24-year-old winger is due for a medical at the Division Four club on Monday after the player agreed personal terms.

The Brewers, who sit level on points with Shrewsbury Town at the top of the table, have accepted an undisclosed fee for the forward.

MacDonald, who has scored six goals in 25 games this season, was due to be out of contract at the Pirelli Stadium at the end of the season.

Speaking after United’s impressive 2-0 win at Stevenage on Saturday, manager Michael Appleton said: “That’s fantastic news, Alex will be coming in at 9am on Monday for his medical.

“As long as everything goes right with that I think it’s going to be a great capture.

“He’s one of Burton’s best players, if not the best and is someone that will bring a lot of quality.”

MacDonald will become Oxford’s third signing of the January transfer window, following the arrivals of defenders Joe Skarz and Richard Brindley from Rotherham United within the last week.

However, the Us haven’t given up on their pursuit of Peterborough United’s Tyrone Barnett after agreeing a fee for the striker, meanwhile the club also have an eye on a new midfielder before the transfer window shuts on Monday night.
