Right-back Brindley joins United

Oxford United have signed Rotherham United defender Richard Brindley on a one-month loan, with a view to a permanent deal. The 21-year-old right-back becomes the second Miller to arrive at the Kassam Stadium in the space of six days following the arrival of fellow full-back Joe Skarz last Saturday.

Brindley began his career at his hometown club Norwich City when he was just nine years-old, but he never made his first-team debut for the Canaries and joined non-league side Chelmsford City back in 2012. The defender impressed in the first-half of his debut season at the Melbourne Stadium before sealing a return to the Football League with Chesterfield in January 2013. In fact; on Saturday 16th March, Brindley set up Marc Richards for the only goal of the game in the Spireites’ 1-0 win over the Us at the Kassam Stadium.

The following season he moved to Rotherham, signing at the same time as fellow new signing left-back Skarz at the New York Stadium. Brindley most recently spent time out on loan at Division Three outfit Scunthorpe United, before returning to score for the Millers in their 5-1 FA Cup defeat to Division Two leaders AFC Bournemouth in the New Year.

“He is a good player who we have watched a number of times and think will do a really good job for us on that right flank,” said United Head Coach Michael Appleton. “He has pace, is solid defensively but also loves to get forward and we are looking forward to working with him.”

Brindley, who is eligible to make his Yellows debut when Oxford visit Stevenage on Saturday, added: “I have been really impressed with Oxford. “I have played against them and heard a lot of good things. Obviously I spoke to Joe Skarz this week when he joined, and I know they are an ambitious club looking to get up the leagues. “I’m looking forward to hopefully playing a part in that.” #

Brindley fills the void left by former Bolton Wanderers loanee Joe Riley after the full-back agreed to join fellow Division Four side Bury following the expiration of his loan deal.
