Alfie departs Oxford

Alfie Potter has left Oxford United after five-and-a-half-years at the club.

The forward has decided to join fellow Division Four club AFC Wimbledon after leaving the Us by mutual consent just hours before.

The 26 year-old made 194 appearances for the Yellows, scoring 28 goals after initially joining on loan from Peterborough United back in 2009.

Potter will always be remembered at Oxford after scoring the winning goal in United’s unforgettable 3-1 Conference play-off final victory over York City at Wembley Stadium back in May 2010.

However, the former Havant and Waterlooville winger has struggled to find form under manager Michael Appleton this season.

He explained: “He’s a good lad and has ability but I believe everyone has a shelf–life at any football club and after talking at length with him we are in agreement that he needs a fresh challenge and he will hopefully tie up a deal at a new club later today.

“We thank him for his efforts at Oxford United and wish him well for the future.”

Despite playing 20 games this campaign, last week Appleton admitted he had told Potter he was free to leave the Kassam Stadium, with Kingsmeadow eventually being unveiled as his next destination.

Wimbledon have failed to disclose the length of Potter’s contract, but boss Neal Ardley was excited about the prospect of his latest acquisition, “My job is to get Alfie’s confidence back and get him sparkling again.

“We wanted someone who could work a bit of magic; a player who could run with the ball and take players on.”

Ardley added: “If we can get Alfie enjoying his football again and back to his best then he will be a fantastic signing.”
