Newey heads for Wilder reunion

Oxford United defender Tom Newey has joined Northampton Town on loan until January 3rd.

The 31 year-old left-back re-joins former Us boss Chris Wilder at Sixfields having not featured for the Yellows since Tareiq Holmes-Dennis’ arrival from Charlton Athletic.

Newey has made 61 appearances for United since arriving at the Kassam Stadium from Scunthorpe United last summer, but has not featured under manager Michael Appleton since their 5-1 mauling at Cambridge United earlier this month.

He trained with the Cobblers this morning, joining fellow new signing Stewart Murdoch from Fleetwood Town, with both additions eligible to make their Northampton debuts against AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

Oxford boss Appleton explained: “With Tareiq arriving and Jon Meades on the bench we had three left-backs in the squad so Tom wasn’t getting games here.

“At his age he wants to be playing every week and so this loan works well for everyone.”
