United add Brown to Riley capture

Oxford United have completed the signing of Fleetwood Town winger Junior Brown on a one-year deal.

The 25-year-old becomes manager Michael Appleton’s fourth summer signing following the arrival of defender Joe Riley on Monday.

Brown, who can also operate at left-back, began his career in the much admired youth set up at Crewe Alexandra before enjoying spells with Halifax Town and Northwich Victoria.

The agile midfielder’s impressive displays in the Conference caught the attention of Fleetwood in 2010 who promptly signed him on a free transfer.

He was part of the Cod Army squad that won promotion to the Football League for the first time in the clubs history back in 2012 before helping the Lancashire club gain promotion into League One last term.

The former Railwaymen youth graduate spent the latter stages of last season on loan at Tranmere Rovers as Fleetwood won the League Two play-off final 1-0 against Burton Albion in May.

Brown, who made 121 appearances for the Cod Army, could make his Oxford debut when the Yellows welcome Division Two outfit AFC Bournemouth to the Kassam Stadium on Saturday for their final pre-season friendly.

After much uncertainty surrounding his future with the club in the third-tier, Brown is looking forward to the challenge that lies ahead with the Us this campaign.

“I have played against Oxford before and know it is a great ground and a good club” he said.

“I have enjoyed my time at Fleetwood but it is time for a new challenge and having spoken to Michael Appleton I think there is something special happening at Oxford which I would love to be part of.”

Yellows boss Appleton added: “Junior is fast and direct and has an eye for goal. He is a player who I think will excite the fans and he will give us balance on that left hand side.

“He has had a pre-season and is fit and raring to go so he will go into the squad against Bournemouth on Saturday.”

Brown’s arrival is the second addition at Grenoble Road this week after Appleton wrapped up the loan signing of right-back Riley.

The 22-year-old, who has spent his entire career at the Macron Stadium, joins new additions Brown, Danny Hylton, Michael Collins and George Long at the club this summer.

Riley made his Premier League debut for the Trotters as a 19-year-old, but long-term injuries have restricted his first-team chances over the last couple of seasons.

Boss Appleton said: “I’m delighted to have Joe here. He is six foot tall, he has pace and he uses the ball well.

“A lot of clubs have been monitoring his career and he has a chance to come here, play games and show everyone what a good player he is.”

Riley described the move as a “great opportunity” and added: “I spoke with Michael then came and had a look around and was really impressed with the whole club.

“It is set up for success and hopefully I can come in and play a part in that.”

Riley made his Us debut alongside Sheffield United loanee Long in Oxford’s 1-0 pre-season defeat at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday night.

And finally, United have unveiled their new home shirt sponsor for the 2014-15 campaign, Black n Rounds.

The tyre firm’s logo was worn by the players for the first time on Thursday afternoon in the Yellows’ annual squad photo.

Oxford are set to wear the new sponsor in their yellow stripe on Saturday when the Us take on Eddie Howe’s Cherries.

Meanwhile Witney-based firm Isinglass feature on the away kit for the second successive season.

The club have also revealed that new logos will be printed on the back of both shirts, with the firms due to be announced shortly.
