Newey offered extension

Defender Tom Newey has been offered a contract extension by Oxford United manager Gary Waddock for next season.

The 31 year-old has been offered fresh terms following the close of the 2013-14 season, with Newey’s future completing the Division Four clubs retained list following yesterday’s announcement.

The left-back arrived at the Kassam Stadium having left league champions Scunthorpe United last summer, with Newey going on to make 47 appearances for the Yellows last term, scoring once.

Boss Waddock explained: “As with James Constable, we would like Tom to stay and be part of what we are looking to build.

“Tom wants to go and talk about it with his family, which I fully understand, but we hope both players will give us answers soon.”

And lastly, three of United’s promising young talents have today signed their first professional contracts with the club.

Striker James Roberts, midfielder Aidan Hawtin and winger Sam Humphreys have all put pen to paper on new deals with the Us.
