Oxford United have confirmed their retained list after the close of the 2013/14 Football League season.
The main headline includes Us top goalscorer James Constable being offered a new contract at the club to extend his stay at the Kassam Stadium to a seventh successive year.
The 29-year-old striker has been top goalscorer in every season since joining United, initially on-loan from Shrewsbury Town back in 2008, netting twelve times in all competitions this term.
Many fans feared ‘Beano’ would be released this summer despite finishing top of the goalscoring charts against, with the former Kidderminster Harriers hitman just one goal shy of equalling Graham Atkinson’s all-time goalscoring record of 107 goals for the club.
The Division Four outfit have also opted to take up the contract option of extending captain Jake Wright’s deal by a further year.
On the other hand; striker Deane Smalley and midfielders Sean Rigg and Scott Davies have been told they will not be a part of United manager Gary Waddock’s plans next season, informing them they will not be offered new contracts this month.
The trio’s departure comes just 48 hours after the club decided not to offer new deals to young defenders Kenzer Lee and David Lynn.
Waddock explained: “It’s never an easy decision and we wish the lads who we have let go well in the future.
“At the same time we draw a line under last season, learn valuable lessons, and look to build a side capable of challenging next time.
“Both Jake Wright and James Constable have been tremendous servants to this club and want to enjoy success here. They have an opportunity to be part of the rebuilding and the exciting times that I believe lie ahead for Oxford United.”
Meanwhile veteran goalkeeper Wayne Brown has also been refused a new playing deal, although the club plan to hold talks with the 37 year-old for a purely coaching role at the Kassam Stadium.
Furthermore, loanees Ryan Williams, David Connolly and Nicky Wroe have all return to their parent clubs Fulham, Portsmouth and Preston North End respectively, whilst out-of-contract defender Tom Newey is set to meet boss Waddock on Friday.
And lastly, centre-half Michael Raynes is set to stay at Oxford after making enough appearances this campaign to trigger a clause in his current contract to extend his deal for a further year.
