Crocombe’s Kiwis bow out

Article by George Dugdale Saturday, June 29th, 2013

Max Crocombe’s U20 World Cup campaign came to an end as New Zealand lost 2-1 to Croatia in Bursa.

The Oxford United goalkeeper returned between the sticks after sitting out the defeat to Uruguay, but was unable to prevent the Kiwis from ending the tournament without a point.

Crocombe was tempted from his line by a wicked Croatian cross after 11 minutes, allowing Stipe Perica to plant his header over him to give Croatia the lead.

The Croatians, who needed a victory to top the group, struck the woodwork before doubling their lead in the second half. Ante Rebic cut inside a Kiwi defender before thumping a right-footed effort into the top right corner of Crocombe’s net, leaving the United man with no chance.

New Zealand scored their first goal of the tournament in the final ten minutes as Louis Fenton struck from the penalty spot, but Croatia held firm to move into the next phase of the tournament with seven points from their three group games.

Crocombe will now return to the club to join up with his team-mates, who are currently taking part in a marine training boot camp.
