Three to go

United welcome Cambridge to the KasStad on Saturday in their penultimate home fixture for the season. Having been overtaken by Yeovil on Tuesday to slip out of the promotion places for the first time this season, United will be keen to get back on the right path, and with only three matches remaining a win is vital. This will be Oxford’s first game since Graham Rix was announced as permanent manager, and it will be interesting to see how the players react, now they know who they have to impress to earn a new contract.

United could feature Barry Quinn in midfield for the first time since his injury in the Cheltenham game, but it could be at the expense of former Cambridge captain Paul Wanless, who will doubtless be keen to play. Steve Basham and Jon Ashton are injury doubts after pulling out of the Darlington game, while Simon Cox could also still be nursing a sore foot. Manny Omoyinmi and Jefferson Louis were both taken off early in yesterday’s reserve game, but that alone won’t guarantee them a place in Saturday’s squad. As usual with Rix, we won’t try and second-guess his selection.

Cambridge still aren’t totally safe from relegation, but with Carlisle a way behind and York in freefall there isn’t any real danger of them going down. The other Us also have a new manager in Frenchman Claude Le Roy, something of an unknown quantity. He hasn’t had the instant success that Brian Horton had a Macclesfield, but then he hasn’t struggled Rix-style either. Difficult match to call, this, so we’ll play it safe and opt for a 0-0 draw as our prediction.
