Today is the 18th anniversary of Wembley Day, the greatest day in the history of Oxford United. A day when all United supporters bow their heads in remembrance, give thanks to the great Jim Smith, and play their 1986 Milk Cup Final videos to death. Congratulations, everyone!
In other news, United slipped out of the play-off zone for the first time this season, despite not playing. Both Yeovil Town and Northampton Town played their games in hand this evening and, although Northampton did United a favour by losing 1-0 at home to Huddersfield (a result, incidentally, that ensures United cannot be promoted automatically), Yeovil jumped above both clubs by winning 2-1 at York, despite York being a goal up at half-time. Yeovil are now one point above United, and with a slightly better goal difference. The evening’s other Division Three game saw Hull come from behind to draw 2-2 at Southend. This means that the Tigers still aren’t certain of automatic promotion.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Graham Rix has recalled Manny Omoyinmi from his loan spell at Gravesend & Northfleet. Manny will probably take part in tomorrow’s reserve’s match against Bournemouth, as may Barry Quinn, Julian Alsop, and possibly even forgotten man, Jefferson Louis. It was reported in today’s Daily Telegraph that Rix is on the verge of being offered a contract to manage United until the end of next season. Whatever one’s thoughts on the abilities of United’s current boss, one has to be concerned that he has only been offered a one-year deal, meaning that the end of next season may well see the same shenanigans as we saw this season with Ian Atkins. Atkins, meanwhile, is on the verge of joining Bristol Rovers this week, Gas chairman Geoff Dunning allegedly coming to an agreement with Firoz Kassam to release Atkins from his United contract.
