Max makes the cut

Oxford United goalkeeper Max Crocombe has been included in the final New Zealand squad to travel to Turkey this June for the Under-20 World Cup finals. The 19-year-old was named in his country’s final 26 man shortlist just two weeks ago, but has now be chosen to represent the Kiwis next month in what will be an extraordinary early pre-season taster for the youth graduate. Crocombe will fly out to his home nation before joining up with the rest of the squad in Sydney for a warm-up match against Australia on 10th June. Two further pre-tournament matches await the young goalkeeper out in Turkey before they start their World Cup campaign on 23rd June. Their group fixtures see Max face stern tests against Uzbekistan and Uruguay before facing Croatia for their final group game on 29th June. It caps off a superb season for the Auckland-born stopper, having impressed United between the sticks after making four appearances which prompted to club to offer Crocombe a new one-year deal. He kept three successive clean sheets in the final three league games of the season having challenged former United keeper Luke McCormick for the number one Jersey, and is expected to threaten regular number one Ryan Clarke for the honour next season.
