On Saturday United visit Doncaster Rovers, managed by former United midfielder Dave Penney. Oxford are unbeaten this season and have only conceded two goals away from home, whereas Doncaster have only scored three at home. Oxford have won the last three meetings between the clubs, but seeing as the most recent game was over twenty years ago that’s not a particularly good guide.
Oxford will have Julian Alsop back following suspension, and seeing as the club failed to win either of the two games that he missed it is difficult to see him not regaining his place. The question is who will partner him, as both Steve Basham and Mark Rawle have good claims. A lot depends on whether the injury that forced Bash from the field at Cheltenham is serious enough to force him to miss the trip to Belle Vue, otherwise Ian Atkins is likely to stick with the club’s leading scorer. It will also be interesting to see if Dean Whitehead keeps his place in midfield following his excellent performance at Whaddon Road and complimentary comments from Atkins. Derek Townsley, though, could be in danger of losing his place to James Hunt if his recent poor performances don’t improve.
Doncaster still feature former United player Dave Morley, who has made just three appearances this season, one of which was in their home defeat to Yeovil on Tuesday. The league newcomers have found the early going harder than they anticipated and Penney is talking about bringing loan players in to strengthen his squad. Rage Online reckons that United will remain unbeaten after this game, but that we’ll only get a point from it in yet another 1-1 draw.
